It’s amazing what a Pops Fernandez can do to a show.
During “Sing Galing’s” (ABC’s popular sing-along TV show) relaunch last Oct. 9, Pops’ trademark was all over.
The whole show has progressed — simple sets were replaced with a concert-like-stage, the contestants were now vocal powerhouses and the surefire treat is now the regular Pops Fernandez opening number.
These and many more make up “Sing Galing’s” transformation into a more serious yet more enjoyable singing contest.
As her co-host John Lapus says, “ for Sing Galing’s” makeover, ABC really spent money for its fiber glass sets and sinagad niya talaga yung studio ng ABC. It’s a stage fit for the Concert Queen!”
Pops too was flattered about what the network has done for the show. One of the things that caught her attention when the show was offered to her was injecting new ideas and concepts to “Sing Galing” which would now be her show. The fun and excitement would still be there and the camaraderie between hosts like in the previous “Sing Galing” hosted by AiAi delas Alas, but there’s the addition of the Scout Raiders for its reality-TV portion.
“I was surprised and flattered. I want to thank ABC . I think they made it a warm comeback for me. It is always nice to feel welcome. It is nice kung alam mo that everyone is happy about the show.”
She added that she is also honored to host the longest sing-a-long contest on television.
“They told me about the changes to make it really naiiba. There is less pressure knowing that AiAi and I are vastly different as perfomers. Our styles are so different. Now it will be my style in the show…AiAi is a very good friend and I love her dearly.”
She also stressed that what is good about working with ABC is that since they are starting all over again, the network is very open to new ideas and concepts. They are aggressive and they don’t mind trying out new things and are open to suggestions.
Pops though is not exclusive with ABC as anyone might presume. Unfortunately, her freedom from any network ties also had its downside. After appearing in “ASAP,” her slot as a guest for “SOP” the following Sunday, which is a rival variety show of another network was cancelled. But these are the drawbacks she already learned in her years in show business.
“I learned a lot especially nowadays that the TV industry is very different. You are lucky to really last for a long time. The tendency now is that there are very many concepts and ang dami rin namin so laging changing ang mga shows. Everyone is very competitive.”
Intrigues didn’t stop raining on Pops immediately after the pilot episode of “Sing Galing” had been aired. Ratings were the subject and her popularity was questioned. But this is something she is used to already in her career.
“Everytime I do something new, I will always get that. But it’s part of showbiz and we have just started.”
There’s a lot to look forward to with Pops these coming months. She will be releasing her latest album from Warner Records Philippines, her birthday concert entitled “It Girl” at the Ultra, her clothing line, Pipay’s anniversary and her new lifestyle TV show By KB Production that will also air on ABC 5.
Below is a casual conversation with the Concert Queen.
Q: Why did you accept the “Sing Galing” project?
A: I’ve always loved to host. There are certain things that come out naturally for us. Hosting is one of those for me. Every chance that I get to host job, I usually accept it. When the concept was offered to me, it sounded fun to combine the fun aspect to the hosting stint and I obviously said yes. I assumed it’ll be interesting since I get to work with the country’s top stand up sing-along comedians. I love them. I think they’re spontaneous and super hilarious. I was proven right after the first episode that we did.
Q: Will your fans see your fashion sense in the show?
A: We each have our own style when it comes to hosting, singing or even acting. Yes, they will get to see a certain fashion sense in this show. I wanted the smart, dressy look, sexy but different. It’s very “Sex and the City.” It will be quite adventurous when it comes to the different looks.
Q: How different is Pops now that she’s nearing her birthday again? Has there been major changes in your life you would like to share?
A: Through the years Pops has evolved into a more responsible and in control woman. I have realized that part of my existence is making people happy thru the form of entertainment. And that now is the only focus I have when it comes to work. There will always be a lot of intrigues and people putting me down for their own benefit but I guess that’s part and parcel of the job. I know my achievements and I know I love what I do. I’m happy with life and I feel so blessed to be able to do what I do.
Q: You have a new album. In the past your albums somehow tell your lifestories. Will your fans know more about you in this album?
A: “When Words Are Not Enough” is a compilation of remakes from several eras. It is still pretty much partly a story of my life, as well as everyone else who’s experienced love.
Q: Why are you calling your birthday concert “It Girl?”
A: Wala lang (smiles). Everyone makes a big deal about titles here. But I’m still so flattered but again, my thrust is more on loving and enjoying what I do best. “It Girl” is the 50’s version of what we now know as, icon, superstar, megastar, diva and so on and so forth. Or among the super models it’s the one with the x factor!
Q: How hard is it for you to maintain being an “it girl?”
A: You don’t maintain it. When you have “it,” you have it (laughs).
Q: What can we expect from your concert? Will you have something prepared to top your shower scene from your last concert?
A: Oh gosh! After how many concerts of trying to top the last memorable scenes, you’ll just have to watch. (smiles)
Q: What else would you like to achieve?
A: I believe that we should never stop dreaming. Never stop learning. Life is good if we put it to good use. There’s always room for new ideas in our lives. I have so much that I list it down and check out the ones that I’ve already accomplished.
Q: How would Pops define success?
A: Success for me is when you’re not afraid to fail. It is when you’ve got at least one thing that you know you’ve done right. I have two — Robin and Ram.
Q: Why is Pipay successful?
A: Pipay is actually a dress to whatever mood your in kind of a store. We have pretty much everything in the store when you feel like being kikay.
Q: You’ve been asked this before but right now where do you see yourself in five years?
A: I go with the flow. Wherever I’ll be happy. That remains to be seen
Q: Has your views on marriage changed that you’d rather be single for the rest of your life?
A: I still believe in marriage.
Q: If ever, do you still have a dream you want to come true? What is it?
A: I have lots of dreams. And in time, I know they’ll come true. How positive can I get? (smiles)
