It’s been over 20 years since the time when she was thrilled to hear her fisrt single, DITO , on the radio and guested in the popular TV sitcom T.O.D.A.S on IBC 13. Pops Fernandez a.k.a Concert Queen is a real performer whose love for her job was unwavering. As she puts it, “I was so small then and totally clueless about the world and the industry. All I was thinking of then was being heard on the radio and being seen on TV. I wasn’t really thinking about how long I’d last. But I did I think it’s because my job is something I love to do.
Born with dreams to fulfill, Maria Cielito (which means ”little heaven” in Spanish) Fernandez didn’t see any of her success coming “I never really noticed,” she says. “I guess you always want more. Maybe there are just some people who are happy with whatever they have in general that sometimes they forget that they have reached their goal. They just keep making room for growth. Like me, I enjoy and have fun with what I’m doing so I never really said to myself. “Okay, I’m there, I’ve reached my goal. It’s a constant duty to reinvent and recreate oneself and that’s the challenge of the whole type of work we have. You can’t do the same thing for two straight years. You have to grow with your craft. And that goes with the way you look, talk, fix yourself, and what you sing.”
Having learned from different experiences, Pops has become more mature both as a person and as an artist. Adding another year in her life last December, she remarks that she has come to the stage where she gets to appreciate life more. She’s oozing who passion for all the things she’s been doing and all the things that make up to her life. “I have never been so excited about life than I am now. I often stop and say I’m happy to have all these blessings. I think life’s been very good and my kids and I have been very blessed. I get to enjoy my kids and at the same time I am allowed to be in a job I have always wanted to be in, which isn’t not a bad thing.” She shares.
As a matter of fact, Pops has a lot of upcoming projects this Valentine month. She is set for a tour, a major Valentine show, in the States. She has a lot of offers outside the country and that would pretty much keep her busy on Valentine’s Day. With her hectic schedule, balancing her career and family has been very hard for her. How does she manage? “Well, usually, the minute I’m done, I go straight home to enjoy my kids,” she quips. And where does she get all the drive in what she does? “I get my inspiration from my kids and they give me strength to do things. Perhaps, subconsciously, I want to be strong for them, “she says.
Pops loves her kids so much and loves to be with them that her favorite leisure activity is just being with them, doing simple things like watching TV and movies with them. What else does she love?
Food: “Anything. I love to eat.” (smiles)
Beverage: “Water”
Get-up: “Very casual.”
Film: “Romantic comedies like Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s
Wedding, Nothing Hill and Bridget Jones. They tackle real-life
issues and take them lightly.”
Book: “Inspirational and those about computers.”
Sport: “Badminton”
Music artist: “Madonna. I like Madonna, I love the way she comes up with
something new all the time. She never runs out of ideas. I like the
fact that she’s not boring, Celine Dion also.. Magaling talaga!
They are strong performers with strong personalities.
Influential person: “My mom. Only ‘coz I don’t really grow up with my dad. And
she’s always been there when I growing up.”
Motto: “Experiencing life and enjoying it. Life is very short so if here's
something you’d like to do, do it now. Don’t be afraid to make a
mistake and fail.”
Lesson learned in the course of her career : “I guess if there’s one thing, it’s that you must have the passion of what you do ‘coz it gives you enough courage to last. If there’s no passion and you’ve doing it just for the sake of it, you won’t have the strength to last.”
When all her glory and fortune, how does Pops keep her feet on the ground? “My family does that well for me. My very good friend, too, especially those I grew up with – schoolmates. They don’t treat me differently when they get together. They tell me the truth so when I perform and they see something wrong, they’d tell me. Just when I thought I did great, all a sudden, they have something to say and so I have to take their comments into consideration. Well, anyway, I am aware that the job I have is temporary. I wouldn’t really get into my head. And when I’m home, I’m just a mom, a daughter and a friend too.”
