With unwavering strength and determination, singer-actress Pops Fernandez keeps her head up despite all the trials and controversies that have hounded her through the years

She breezed into the room, her tall, svelte frame carrying an air of confidence and poise as she drew attention to the people around her. Who would blame them? Certainly this woman possessed something more than just a pretty face and a unique name. There's something more to Pops Fernandez than meets the eye.
Trading her straight tresses to wavy locks, bedimpled Pops radiated the warmth and friendliness of a child. Yet when you look at her, a thousand images flash on her face: her character, her regal bearing, her confidence.
Although she has been in the limelight since her teen years, a certain characteristic sets her apart from the rest. She has shown unwavering strength and determination that have enabled her to establish a successful career in showbusiness and weather controversies and circumstances that are part of the industry.
Born Ma. Cielito Fernandez, Pops started her career at the tender age of 16. She has been in show business for 19 years, starting as a host for the television show Penthouse Live in 1982. She never thought her career in the entertainment business would last this long, given the difficulties and controversies that accompany such high-profile work.
Known for years as the undisputed "Concert Queen", she has staged successful concerts since 1983. Some of her popular performances are "Shindig" held at the ULTRA and the latest one last February was "Martin and Pops: In Concert" together with her former husband, Martin Nievera. Her albums such as Dito, Just Say You Love Me, Don't Say Goodbye, We Can Work It Out, Awesome Album and The Way I Feel Inside earned Gold Record Awards simultaneously.
Pops' versatility does not end in singing. She has also shown her talent in the movies and on television. Her latest films such as Linlang with Richard Gomez and Joyce Jimenez, Gusto Ko nang Lumigaya with Albert Martinez and Diether Ocampo and the recent Videoke King with Robin Padilla were top grossers in the movie charts.

Her efforts in the industry have been recognized by the numerous awards she has received. She was the winner for Best Outstanding Concert Hall Act for Guillermo Mendoza Hall Awards way back in 1985 when she was just starting her singing career. She was the Star Awards for Television's Best Female Variety Show Host for two consecutive years from 1992 to 1993 and again in 1995. Presently, she is one of the co-hosts in ABS-CBN's weekend variety show, A.S.A.P. In 1992 and 1993, she was cited as the Most Famous Celebrity Mother of Gintong Ina Foundation.
Behind the Scenes
After her failed marriage with Martin Nievera, she seldom talks about her love life. Her world revolves around her two sons, Robin and Ram. "I've got very obedient and loving kids and a career that I love as well. There's nobody special right now, but I know my time will come," she says with a smile.
With love life taking a backseat at the moment, Pops hopes to do more concerts in the country and overseas, and possibly launch a new album within the year.
Also, she hopes to further hone her talent, this time, on a different level. "I want to develop myself behind the scenes. I want to go into producing or directing," she says in reply to a question from HerWord.com.
While her foray into production and direction may take a while, Pops has transformed her innate style and fashion sense into a new business. Called "Pipay", the concert queen's pet name, this line of clothes and accessories are already being sold in major malls in Metro Manila.

Yet, despite her hectic schedule as a performer, entrepreneur and a mother, Pops still takes some time to unwind and relax. "I just stay at home when I don't have work. As much as possible I spend time with my kids watching movies and eating out. When I pamper myself, I get total relaxation from the spa," she says.
New product
Herword.com was able to get to know Pops during the product launch of "Confident" feminine napkins for which she is the product endorser.
Although hip and trendy in dramatically cut jeans, old rose and brown, floral printed blouse and a denim jacket, Pops exuded poise and charm.
I'm actually flattered to know that I was the first choice to endorse the product," she admits.
Asked on what boosts her confidence, Pops says "I think it's the experiences I got, the hits and misses that I went through and the trials I have faced and conquered that make me confident of who I am as a woman."
For Pops, being confident means to take on our roles without keeping sight of our dreams and aspirations. "I've always marveled at the phrase from the movie Jerry Maguire 'You complete me', hoping that somebody would say that to me. As I moved on with my life, I learned that I don't really need to believe that because I am complete on my own."
