MC CLOSE ENCOUNTER
POPS FERNANDEZ
When Words Are Not Enough
By: Gregie Alano
Make way for the unbeatable Concert Queen-one of the most prominent personalities in the music industry and probably the longest pop female icon of her contemporaries in OPM. She is a survivor after several shipwrecks in the course of life and love. An independent woman, dimpled with a smile that shows warmth and strength that has been a part of her charm - which brought her numerous success. And the sum of all these astonishing modern woman qualities is a name renowned to all Filipino households – Pops Fernandez.
When the muses generously showered the world all their talents, Pops Fernandez must have been wide-awake and bagged them all. You constantly see her in television singing, dancing, hosting and acting. And for almost two decades, Pops has been successful in her career as a singer and as an actress and it would be very much suitable for her to be called the “Daughter of Entertainment”.
She also made a number of movies as well as starting on 1982 with Pag-ibig Pa co-starring Rowell Santiago but eventually left the film industry in 1990 with Too Young, the debut movie of Aiko Melendez and Eric Quizon.
Pops had concentrated mainly on her singing and hosting career during the 90’s. Those were her A.S.A.P years when she won the Best Female Host award.
After nine years, Pops broadened her horizons again by coming back to the silver screen with Linlang (1999), where she co-starred with Richard Gomez and Joyce Jimenez. And her latest was Videoke King (2001) with Robin Padilla.
For the record Pops was able to work with great Filipino actors such as Tito, Vic and Joey, Richard Gomez, Eric Quizon, Aga Mulach, the “Diamond Star” Miss Maricel Soriano and many more.
Unlike her acting career, her singing career continued to blossom all these years. Pops started recording in 1982 (the same year when she started making movies). Her first album was entitled POPS under Octo Arts – where she housed her recording talent for six years. Her last album under this recording company was POPS FERNANDEZ AWESOME - the album brought her a Gold album in 1989 and a Platinum Record after a year.
Pops had jumped from recording company to another after she left Octo Arts. Among these were Vicor Music Corporation (1991), Dyna Recording Company (1993), Star Records (1995-99) and Viva Records. But it is Warner Music Philippines who actually caught Pops in her romantic era when she shifted from popular mainstream to easy listening. The Concert Queen is on the road again to hit the charts with her latest album WHEN WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH starting but with the carrier single ‘You Take My Breath Away”.
WHEN WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH is a compilation of remade songs from different eras. The first single, “You Take My Breath Away”, originally by Rex Smith. Another is the classic rock “light My Fire” originally done by Doors.” Fallen”, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered”, and “You Don’t Know Me” are also included in the selection.
Aside from the remakes, the album contains original compositions, “If I Had Only Known”, Hahanapin Mo Ba Ako”, and “Higit Sa Lahat…Mahal Mo Ako”.
Let's get intimate with Miss Pops Fernandez to get to know more about her and her new album.
Why did you call it WHEN WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH?
PF: When we were doing the album, I was always saying? I don’t want to get the title from of the songs in it, has been done. I wanted to be different-it has to be a phase, it has to be something romantic – I was always in my romantic moments when I was doing the album. It has to be something that they’ll never expect. So, nung natapos na everything na mix na lahat ng songs and we’ve done the pictorial already, we still did not have the title. We’re coming out of time and we have to submit the project to Warner. And then it just dawned on me because I kept telling Margot (Gallardo, producer) it has to be something that goes with when words are not enough and then I said hey, why don’t we just use WHEN WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH because it’s very romantic, it says a lot of things.
And in my mind when words are not enough, and pretty much my words are never enough. Believe it or not I’m really shy when it comes to saying what I really feel that’s why I choose the title. I never really know what right words to say especially with regards to the affairs of the heart. Usually when words are not enough, I usually sing, write letters, and give small gifts. I guess everybody is different in terms of expression when words are not enough.
Is this the sexiest cover you’ve ever done on your album?
PF: Just a little trivia, this (album cover) was not meant to be the cover. We actually had a series of pictures that we actually chose na in the pictorial pero I really love this one so I wanted to make sure that I chose the right colors. So, what I did was, without telling Warner that I like this picture, I sent them the top three choices that I had in hope that they would chose this. So, without my influence (laughs) they got back to me and they chose this. I was so happy. Kasi usually, di ba, album covers are usually mga close-up, medium shots-if you want to notice the artist right away. So when they chose this, I said, ‘uy, yehey! That’s my favorite.’ And I think its so bagay for the concepts of the album as well as to the title, and the picture says so much, it’s very romantic…and yeah…it’s sexy (laughs). I think it’s just the whole picture that made the whole drama.
How was it working with Ricky Ilacad being the co-Executive Producer of the album?
PF: Well, I’ve known Ricky for a long time, since my very first recording company, which is Octo Arts and that’s where we first met. He made me feel very comfortable when we actually got together and approached him to for the project (WHEN WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH). And he actually gave us the blessing of coming up with an album to have a say on it. Of course, we worked hand in hand with Warner Music. I’ll felt really good. We could say that they have all the support and the confidence.
I guess it’s different for artist, like I say all the time-we have different styles, we have a different sound. We usually want to try out something new when we come up with a project, so having a bigger hand in the project is a different kind of joy that I experienced. Kasi usually I would just say, ‘Sana we can do this or sana we can do that.’ But I guess given a free hand, again-of course working hand in hand with them (Warner) and of course Margot Gallardo – the producer, it made us feel more comfortable. And I think that’s why earlier I got a comment saying that “you sound so different in your album, you sound so in love;” o di ba? (Laughs). No, but it’s true. I guess because I was inspired to do it.
Now, I’m more confident with the choice of songs but not that I want it then, it’s just that now it’s a totally different thing for me-this is the first time that I’ve done it so it’s a new experience again, it’s a different field.
What made you decide to work with Warner Music?
PF: Why not? (Laughs). They’re a good company. Like I said, I know Tito Ricky from the past, it was a very good deal. I was given a lot of first hand work with the project and so far I’m having a great time working for them. Everything has been smooth sailing from the production of the album, the recording, until it was done. Now, we’re actually on the launching and the promoting process and it’s always nice when everything is smooth sailing so I think I made the right choice-it’s a very good choice.
Track number six in the album, Light My Fire – a very interesting song. Who came up with the idea to include it?
PF: We wanted something that is sexy, again a remake, I actually thought of another song that we’re kind of happy with and then Margot said ‘do you remember Light My Fire”? And I said, “Light My Fire, is that bagay for me? Sabi niya, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’re gonna make it different, we’re gonna change the arrangement, we’re gonna make it a little sexy and yet still have that rock feel.” And I said, “Hmmm…I thought I might try do that…(laughs)…Let’s try it anyway because I’m familiar with the song,” That’s how “Light My Fire” came up.
Would you like to come up with another album, which is all-original?
PF: We would have to ask Warner about that. I would love to do that sometime in the future. Yes, why not? Siguro we’ll give it some time and then we could work on another project.
WHEN WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH is now available in all leading music stores and record bars by Warner Music Philippines.
