Pops and Regine: A fiery combination
USA Balita
April 8-14, 2005
By Cora Pastrana
QUEENS...on Fire! Why the title? At the press
conference days before, Filipino pop divas Pops
Fernandez and Regine did not know why. But if you got
to watch the duo's show at the Grand Olympic last
Saturday night then, you would know answer.
The title could aptly describe Pops, the "Concert
Queen" herself, who was most vampy. The former Mrs.
Nievera looked hot onstage in her revealing costumes
and less inhibited dance sequences. but she would do
well to regain some of the lost pounds. Regine, on the
other hand, looked as though she needs to lose some.
Still, the both of them were pleasing to the eye, all
dolled up in coordinated colors and outfits. Pops'
hairstyle changed at every appearance but not Regine,
whose new short hairdo was quite becoming.
Their musical repertoire was most entertaining.
Ribbing each other on their "love life"--or lack of
it--drew the laughter. The "Dolphy and Panchito" act
clearly showed the duo's chemistry and brought to the
fore Regine's natural comic flair. And, there was less
screaming (when reaching for high notes) from "Asia's
Songbird." Moving was Pops' rendition of "Hanggang
Saa...Hanggang kailan" from her movie Linlang, and the
duo's dramatic interpretation of "To Love a Woman."
Special guest Erik Santos soared with "I Believe I Can
Fly" and despaired with "Isang Saglit."
This weekend, the hitmaking roadshow will be in San
Francisco and from there proceed to the East Coast.
Las stop will be Guam. Star Media should let go of the
leaping gymnasts and awkward dancers who do nothing
but retract from the main attraction.
