For Pops Fernandez
Life begins at 37
By Tessa C. Mauricio
Who would believe that Concert Queen Pops Fernandez is mom to a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old? With a face that teenage girls would envy, so fresh and all aglow, she is looking young as ever at 37.
The clue to her looking like that despite a hectic career is in the title of her ongoing comedy show on GMA 7. Pops Fernandez is All Together Now.
“I’ve never been more responsible and independent in my life [than now],” shares the lady who grew up before public eye as a singer and actress. “I found myself after the breakup,” she adds, referring to her annulled marriage with Concert King Martin Nievera.
Fernandez admits that she had always been a “baby” until her separation, sheltered as she was by her ex-husband and, before him, by her late actor father Eddie Fernandez and mother Dulce Lucban. She laughs at the memory of being frightened at being left on her own even in her early adult years.
“Leave me in any public place before, and I’d never even find the bathroom!” Pops ridicules herself good-naturedly.
Today, she is juggling a successful career on television, a promising business, and single-motherhood quite impressively. She recently concluded her first ever soap opera on GMA 7, Twin Hearts, and enjoying her sticom with the crazy bunch of Christopher de Leon, Edgar Mortiz and Johnny Delgado.
“More than ever, in the last year, I was able to explore the many opportunities in television,” Pops relates. “I’ve never done a soap opera before, and even if I had to cry on one set and laugh in the next for All Together Now, I found it all fulfilling.”
The Concert Queen admits her singing career has taken a back seat for the moment, but she plans to jump back into the live circuit as soon as she returns from a family holiday in June. After all, she has more time to do that with one less TV show at her mother studio now. <http://www.manilatimes.net/images2/etc/dot.gif>
